Aluminium is a key material in multiple industrial sectors due to its excellent strength/weight ratio and versatility in applications such as construction, automotive and electrical equipment manufacturing. However, its machining process generates a large amount of metal chips, representing between 10% and 90% of the material processed. The accumulation of these wastes and their improper disposal can contribute to environmental pollution, affecting water sources and soils. This project aims to reuse A6061 aluminium chips by alloying them with carbon nanotubes and an innovative microwave casting process, with the aim of producing metal sponges capable of absorbing oil in contaminated water bodies. These sponges have a porous structure that facilitates the selective retention of hydrocarbons, allowing the recovery of spilled oil and reducing the environmental impact on rivers, lakes and seas. Unlike other decontamination methods, this approach not only optimizes energy consumption and reduces processing times, but also promotes a circular economy model, Reusing industrial waste for a new application in environmental sanitation. The implementation of this technology offers an innovative and sustainable solution to mitigate water pollution, ensuring more efficient management of industrial waste and contributing to the preservation of a clean and healthy environment.
