Strengthening academic networks: an innovative methodological strategy for engineering education

This article is the report and evidence of the exploration of various strategies implemented by the student chapter ACOFI (Colombian Association of Engineering Schools) to energize engineering education through the creation of academic networks that connect students and professionals from different academic contexts such as: ASCOLFA (Colombian Association of Administration Schools) and the armed forces.
In Colombia, there is still a significant gap in the inter-institutional connection between universities, productive sectors and state organizations. This disconnect limits the exchange of knowledge and the practical application of learning, which makes it difficult to prepare students to face an increasingly demanding labor market. Faced with this challenge, methodological strategies such as academic networks are generated, which in this particular case is the ACOFI chapter, which seeks to generate a collaborative environment that allows students to interact in real projects, improving their training and developing essential soft skills such as teamwork, effective communication and problem solving.
Since 2019, significant connections have been established, starting with an academic network with the National Navy that allowed cadets and engineering students to collaborate on practical and military projects. In 2023, a collaboration was formalized with the National Army, expanding learning opportunities, and more recently it was linked with the Colombian Aerospace Force, providing participants with the opportunity to explore areas of high specialization and constant evolution from our engineering discipline.
These interactions allow students to apply their knowledge in real scenarios, face complex problems and innovate in their resolution, which strengthens their preparation for the labor market. In addition, interdisciplinary work promotes a deeper understanding of various areas of knowledge, enriching academic experience.
Likewise, the creation of a network of ASCOLFA students at the Marcó Fidel Suarez Military School of Aviation (EMAVI) is proposed, which will unite academics and students from various disciplines to promote the exchange of knowledge and develop joint projects that address relevant social problems. This initiative will contribute to innovation in higher education and strengthen the comprehensive training of students.
The results obtained so far reflect a growing interest of students and academics in participating in these networks, demonstrating the need to establish stronger inter-institutional connections. This phenomenon can strengthen the educational ecosystem in Colombia, facilitating the exchange of good practices and supporting the development of higher education.
In conclusion, the strengthening of academic networks from ACOFI to sectors such as ASCOLFA and the military have proven to be an innovative and effective methodological strategy to enrich engineering education. These initiatives provide valuable experiences that contribute to the training of competent professionals prepared to face the challenges of today's world. Inter-institutional collaboration is consolidated as a fundamental pillar for the evolution of education, promoting a practical and multidisciplinary approach that prepares future leaders.
