Abstract

In the Millennium Development Goals for Sustainable Development and the 2030 Foresight, emphasis is placed on No. 6 to promote "Clean Water and Sanitation", which is associated with sustainable agriculture from an agricultural production approach that seeks a balance between environmental sustainability, economic profitability and social equity and involves the implementation of practices that minimize the negative impact on the environment while ensuring food security and the well-being of communities in Colombia. Accordingly, one of UNIMINUTO's institutional research lines called "Social and Productive Innovations", the Faculty of Engineering has allowed developments and advances in research and technology by Research Groups such as the Civil Engineering Research Study Group GEIIC and the Agroeco and Environmental Management Research Group in order to answer the following question: Is it possible to use modern analytical techniques for the detection of heavy metals in bodies of water and as a commitment to sustainable agriculture in Colombia?

Based on the above, a mixed-methodological approach is proposed through different phases of work that combine qualitative aspects, experimental work, and data collection using modern analytical techniques for metal detection. Preliminary results reflect the importance of water bodies, their treatment, and the use of these waters for crops. Finally, it is concluded that Colombian society urgently requires the development of a scientific research program for the advancement and investigation of heavy metals in cities, municipalities, townships, and villages across the country. This program will provide a comprehensive overview, rather than isolated, small-scale diagnostic studies that merely reflect observations of the situation and do not allow for the implementation and implementation of scientific and technological approaches to water.
