The strategy called "Research Project in Second Language (PISL)" has been implemented in the Project Formulation and Evaluation course of the Civil Engineering program at Universidad Simón Bolívar, with the objective of promoting the immersion and deep understanding of the scientific language of Civil Engineering and communication in a second language, specifically English. This initiative integrates two fundamental aspects of university education: the development of research, analysis and synthesis skills, as well as the mastery of a second language.
In order to carry out the PISL strategy effectively, it requires a planned organization incorporated in the Analytical Programs of the course- PAC, coordination between the professor, the students and the institutional resources suggested for the development of the strategy. It is essential to establish clear evaluation criteria to measure the progress of students in both the research and linguistic aspects. In addition, the necessary resources, such as recognized scientific databases and linguistic support, must be provided to ensure the success of the projects.
The main objective of the PISL strategy is to strengthen students' research skills, allowing them to pose and solve problems within their area of study. In addition, it promotes communicative competence in a second language, which not only increases their employability, but also opens doors for them to participate in international scientific activities, such as seminars, presentations or scientific congresses. This combination of potential skills not only benefits their academic development, but can also be fundamental for those who aspire to start and establish their own business in the field of Civil Engineering in accordance with the trends and dynamics of the profession in a globalized environment.
In summary, the implementation of the Second Language Research Project in the Civil Engineering program at Universidad Simón Bolívar represents a valuable opportunity to enrich the academic training of students, combining research in their field of study with the development of language skills relevant to the professional environment.
